Frequently Asked Questions

What is it all about?

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is a cosmetic surgical procedure used to tighten the skin around the eyes. Upper eyelid surgery corrects the shape of the upper eyelid by removing upper eyelid puffiness. Lower eyelid surgery addresses the wrinkling and puffiness of the lower eyelid.

Both upper and lower eyelid surgeries can be performed using various techniques and methods, tailored to the specific needs of the patient. The surgery may focus solely on the upper or lower eyelids, or both, depending on the patient’s requirements. Sometimes, fat may also be removed from the area around the eyelids during the procedure. If the lower eyelid area is hollow, fat transfer may be combined with lower eyelid surgery as needed.

Who is eligible for upper or lower eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery is suitable for patients who want to appear younger. Removing sagging skin brightens and rejuvenates the face.

Upper or lower eyelid surgery may be appropriate for you if:

  • You are relatively healthy.
  • You do not have serious issues with your eyes.
  • You find yourself constantly needing to address sagging eyelids.
  • Your lifestyle is unfairly questioned due to puffiness and constant swelling around your eyes.

Lower or upper eyelid surgery is often performed either on the brink of middle age or during middle age. Eyelid surgery can also be performed on a younger individual over the age of 18 if the appearance of the eyelids bothers them.

Who is suitable for upper eyelid surgery?

  • For you, who always looks tired because of your sagging upper eyelids
  • For you, whose drooping upper eyelids limit your field of vision
  • For you, for whom sagging upper eyelids cause fatigue
  • For you, who constantly have to raise your eyebrows to lift sagging upper eyelids
  • For you, who struggle daily with applying eye makeup
  • For you, whose upper eyelid fold is chafed or even sore

However, surgery is not always necessary. If the heaviness of the upper eyelids is moderate, the problem can also be corrected with botulinum or UltraLift™ HIFU treatment.

Who is suitable for lower eyelid surgery?

  • For you, whose lower eyelids constantly sag, even when you’re well-rested
  • For you, who constantly try to conceal the sagging of your lower eyelids with cosmetic products
  • For you, whose lifestyle is questioned due to under-eye bags

Anyone considering lower eyelid surgery should begin the process with a free consultation. Sagging, swelling, and dark circles under the eyes can also be treated without surgery if the excess tissue is still minimal.

What the surgery is like?

Eyelid surgery is a relatively straightforward procedure, especially when compared to other cosmetic surgeries. The surgery can be performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia.

Before the surgery, the operating surgeon creates a so-called surgical map of the area, which helps in removing excess tissue. The actual surgery is performed with a scalpel or laser. At City Clinic, the use of an electric scalpel is preferred.

The surgery itself typically takes about two hours. Often, the patient stays at the clinic for some time for observation before going home.

Laser or scalpel?

Eyelid surgery can be performed using various tools such as a scalpel, laser, or electric scalpel. The choice of instrument does not affect the outcome of the surgery. Rather, the result depends more on the skills of the surgeon using the surgical tool.

Some surgeons prefer using lasers, while others prefer performing the surgery with a scalpel. It primarily reflects the personal preferences of the surgeons and, to some extent, differences in their training.

If the surgeon is skilled, has extensive experience, and a strong aesthetic sense, the surgical outcome will be equally good whether a laser or scalpel is chosen as the tool.

Who performs upper and lower eyelid surgery?

At Cityklinikka, upper eyelid surgeries are performed by plastic surgeon Riikka Veltheim, as well as experienced aesthetic doctor Piotr Sikorski.

Lower eyelid surgeries are performed by plastic surgeon Veltheim and doctor Karakulova.

Aesthetic doctors typically perform surgeries under local anesthesia. Plastic surgeon Riikka Veltheim performs eyelid surgeries under both local anesthesia and general anesthesia.

Can upper and lower eyelid surgery be performed at the same time?

Upper and lower eyelids can be operated on during the same surgery.
